The bag of lawn fertilizer at the home improvement store has three big numbers on the front — something like 24-0-6 or 18-24-12. The numbers are not arbitrary, and they tell you almost everything you need to know about whether you are buying the right product for your situation. A homeowner who understands what the numbers mean, and what the right timing is for their grass type and climate, can produce a substantially better lawn with less effort than the conventional four-application calendar.
The three numbers
The three numbers on every fertilizer bag are the N-P-K ratio: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium. They are expressed as the percentage of each element by weight.
Nitrogen (N): the growth driver
Nitrogen produces the visible green color and the leaf-blade growth that homeowners associate with a healthy lawn. Most lawn fertilizers have a high first number because nitrogen is the primary visible response.
Too little nitrogen produces a yellow-green, slow-growing lawn. Too much produces excess top growth at the expense of root development, increases vulnerability to disease, and increases the frequency of mowing required.
The recommended annual nitrogen application for most cool-season lawns is roughly 2 to 4 pounds of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet, divided across multiple applications through the season. Warm-season lawns are similar, sometimes higher. A bag of 24-0-6 contains 24 percent actual nitrogen by weight, so a 40-pound bag contains 9.6 pounds of nitrogen — enough for roughly 3,000 to 5,000 square feet at the appropriate rate.
Phosphorus (P): the root and seedling driver
Phosphorus supports root development and the establishment of new grass. It is less mobile in soil than nitrogen and accumulates over time in established lawns. As a result, most mature lawns do not need additional phosphorus and many states now restrict the sale of phosphorus-containing fertilizer for established lawns — both to prevent runoff (phosphorus is a major contributor to lake and stream eutrophication) and because the application is genuinely unnecessary on most lawns.
This is why most "maintenance" lawn fertilizers now have a zero in the middle of the N-P-K ratio. A bag of starter fertilizer for seeding or sodding will have a real phosphorus number; a maintenance bag for an established lawn typically will not.
Potassium (K): the resilience driver
Potassium supports stress tolerance — drought, cold, disease, and heat resistance. Late-season fertilizer applications often emphasize potassium for winter hardiness in cool-season lawns. The right potassium application varies by soil test results; some soils are naturally rich in potassium and need no supplemental application, while others are deficient and need supplementation.
The starting point: soil test
Before deciding on fertilizer at all, a soil test from a local cooperative extension service costs $10 to $30 and produces a recommendation for your specific lawn. The test measures pH, organic matter, and nutrient levels, and produces a recommendation for what to apply.
Many lawns have been over-fertilized with phosphorus and potassium for years and need essentially nitrogen-only application going forward. Other lawns have specific deficiencies (often potassium in sandy soils, sometimes magnesium or iron) that no general-purpose fertilizer addresses. A soil test resolves this in two pages and is the single most useful investment in a lawn-care program.
The cooperative extension service at your state's land grant university is the right place to get the test. They are not selling fertilizer; they are providing accurate diagnostic information.
Timing for cool-season lawns
Cool-season grasses (Kentucky bluegrass, fescues, ryegrass) grow most actively in spring and fall, with reduced growth in summer. The right fertilization pattern matches this rhythm.
Early fall (September): The most important application of the year. Cool-season lawns respond strongly to fall fertilization, building reserves and root mass for the next year. A nitrogen-focused product is appropriate.
Late fall (November, before ground freezes): A second application supports winter hardiness and produces an early green-up in spring. Some products marketed as "winterizer" emphasize potassium for this reason. Application timing is critical — too early in fall and growth is excessive; too late and the lawn cannot absorb.
Spring (April or May, after green-up): A modest application supports spring growth. Less is more — heavy spring fertilization produces excessive top growth, increases disease pressure, and reduces summer heat tolerance.
Summer: Most cool-season lawns benefit from no fertilization in the heat of summer. Applying nitrogen during heat stress can damage the lawn.
Timing for warm-season lawns
Warm-season grasses (Bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine, centipede) are essentially the opposite. They grow most actively in summer heat and go dormant in winter.
Late spring (May, after full green-up): First application as the grass enters active growth.
Summer (June, July, August): Continued applications support summer growth. Centipede is the exception — it needs less nitrogen than other warm-season grasses, and over-fertilization causes "centipede decline."
Early fall (September): A final application before dormancy.
Winter: No fertilization; the grass is dormant and cannot use it. Some products are sold as "winterizer" for warm-season lawns; turfgrass specialists are skeptical of these.
Slow-release vs. quick-release
Modern lawn fertilizers commonly include both quick-release (immediately available) and slow-release (controlled release over weeks) forms of nitrogen. Slow-release products produce a longer, more even response — less of the post-application growth spike followed by yellow-green decline that quick-release products produce.
For most homeowners, products labeled "controlled-release" or "extended feeding" with substantial slow-release content are the better choice. They cost slightly more per bag but produce better results with less risk of burning the lawn, and require fewer applications per year.
Organic options
Organic fertilizers — corn gluten meal, milorganite (a municipal biosolid product), compost, and various plant-derived products — release nutrients more slowly and unevenly than synthetic fertilizers, contribute organic matter to the soil, and avoid concerns about runoff and child or pet exposure to recently-applied product.
The performance is generally good if applied with adequate quantities and patience. The total nitrogen per dollar is lower than synthetic products, and the response is slower to appear. For homeowners who value the organic approach, milorganite specifically has a long track record and is widely available.
The application practice
Apply fertilizer to a dry lawn, with a spreader calibrated for the specific product. Water lightly afterward to move the granules off the leaf blades and into the soil. Avoid applying right before heavy rain (which will move the fertilizer off your lawn and into stormwater).
Sweep or blow any granules that land on hard surfaces back into the lawn. Fertilizer in the gutter ends up in waterways and contributes to pollution. Sweeping it back is a thirty-second job with environmental benefit.
The single most useful first step
Before buying any fertilizer, get a soil test from your state cooperative extension. The cost is modest, the recommendation is specific to your lawn, and the resulting program is consistently better than the generic four-step calendar most homeowners follow.
